Good on You is an app focused on ethical fashion that provides information, news, offers
and news, all about sustainable and ethical fashion choices. Their aim is to connect
customers who want to make better choices when buying clothes – whether it’s to have a
better impact environmentally or to make sure the company they’re buying from is kind to
animals – to the companies that are committed to sustainability and ethical practises.

The app first was released in Australia in 2015, inspired by the desire to make a change after
the disaster in the Bangladesh Rana Plaza garment factory which collapsed. The hope was to
encourage those in the industry to do better, and to encourage consumers to make better
choices when they’re able to. It was later released in the US and Canada, and then in 2018 it
was released in Europe. It is owned by Ethical Consumers Australia, a non-profit.

The app works by considering a number of different factors that the brand might affect –
how it affects people (such as does it come from an ethical factory), does it have little
impact on the environment, and does it contain animal products that are cruel such as fur.
They also factor in whether the brand is working towards improving their effect, or if they
are actively working against it (eg lobbying against eco-friendly laws, for example).

Users sign into the app and then select their region, followed by what items they’re looking
for. They can filter by brand, price, or just the sort of clothing they’re looking for. There is
even a location option if you want to buy items in person from a store instead of ordering
online. With a rating system included, it’s easy to pick out what fits your ideals best. You can
finish off your shopping by sending a thank you note to the companies that fit the bill for
you.
