A Democracy Now! radio special: On Valentine’s Day, we look into two of the luxury industries that have come to expect huge profits on this hyper-consumerized occasion. We begin with chocolate. A scathing new report by veteran journalist and author Christian Parenti says hardly any progress has been made in the cocoa industry’s pledges to address child labor. We host a debate between Parenti and William Guyton, president of the World Cocoa Foundation. [includes rush transcript]

@bld2104 What you say makes a lot of sense, but I have a feeling that this is a "temporary" rating. Part of the rating scale is transparency, because it's easy for a company to say that they're fair-trade without actually being fair-trade. If they can't tell the world how they know that their product is fairly traded, I think it's reasonable to view it with some suspicion. Hopefully Endangered Species provides F2W (and the general public) with more information that will confirm their fair-trade claims and explain their practices.

Hi, I've been following the issues surrounding the cocoa trade closely, and think that your ratings need to be revised. Nestle should be much lower than a C; they are frequently ranked one of the most irresponsible companies in the world. Also, the Endangered Species brand, if I remember correctly, certifies that their purchasing of cocoa is fair. Even if they are not Fair Trade Certified, they should certainly be ranked higher than Nestle. This is all I have had a chance to look at so far, but hope my constructive criticisms have been helpful. Overall, I love the idea of your website and have shared it with my friends in Facebook. Thank you.
